FOLLOWING THE IOC’S DECISION IN FEBRUARY TO AWARD THE YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES 2022 TO AN AFRICAN NOC, TODAY THE IOC EXECUTIVE BOARD APPROVED THE LIST OF NATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEES THAT WILL NOW MOVE TO THE CANDIDATURE PHASE. BOTSWANA, NIGERIA, SENEGAL AND TUNISIA ALL REMAIN IN CONTENTION TO HOST THE FOURTH EDITION OF THE SUMMER YOG.
Over the past month, three-day visits were made by IOC experts to each country to gather information on the motivations for hosting the YOG and on the potential master plan, and to make key site visits to existing fields of play. The visits involved preparing feasibility reports on existing indoor multi-purpose arenas, potential sites for outdoor festivals, temporary facilities and accommodation solutions. Today’s report included information collected by IOC experts on the following themes: motivation and objectives; youth and sport strategies; the YOG as a catalyst; and experience of hosting major events.
In line with Olympic Agenda 2020 and the “New Norm”, a new process for selecting a YOG host aims to simplify and streamline, and ensure cost efficiency for the Candidate Parties.
Today marks the closing of the Dialogue Phase, and the process now moves to the Candidature Phase. Between now and the end of August, the IOC Evaluation Commission will further assess with the Candidate Parties their projects, with the aim of proposing a maximum of two for the IOC Executive Board to recommend for consideration by the IOC membership.
Led by IOC Member in Turkey Uğur Erdener, the YOG 2022 Evaluation Commission will submit its final report and recommendation in September 2018, and the host for the YOG 2022 will be elected at the IOC Session in October 2018 in Buenos Aires.
