“Munich1972; The Design of a Democratic Body. The 1972 Olympic Games offered the host country, West Germany, an unrivalled opportunity to portray itself to the world as a modern, democratic and culturally aware nation. Various design disciplines played a central role in the preparations for the games. Architecture, design and landscape architecture were integrated in a total design intended to exude openness and inclusivity. This carefully constructed image was marred two weeks into the games when eight members of the Black September Organisation infiltrated the Olympic Village and took the Israeli team hostage. The exhibition Munich 1972. The Design of a Democratic Body tells this controversial story through the lens of design, by contrasting the narratives and aesthetic strategies of the organisers with the tactics deployed for their disruption. The exhibition at Het Nieuwe Instituut also examines the role of the media in spreading these stories.” | Photo: Martijn Giebels

Olympic Villages: a hundred years of urban planning and shared experiences

The book contains a selection of debates and a compilation of papers presented at the 2nd Symposium of the International Chair in Olympism (IOC-UAB) on Olympic Villages, held in November 1996 at the Olympic Museum Lausanne. The urban planning of Olympic Villages, their organisation during the celebration of the Olympic Games and the experiences shared by athletes at Olympic Villages were the main themes analysed by 80 attendees. The book is divided into two thematic areas. The first focuses on the urban planning of Olympic Villages and their historical evolution and typology, and it contains detailed references to the experiences of Albertville 1992 and Salt Lake City 2002. The second focuses on the day-to-day organisation of athletes residing at Olympic Villages, the Olympic Village requirements that the IOC places on organising committees, and Olympic Village management experiences.
