IOC Executive Board meets to prepare for the Session in June
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board (EB) met today in Lausanne, Switzerland, to prepare for the IOC Session scheduled from 24 to 26 June, in the same city.

IOC EB recommends boxing keep its place on the Tokyo 2020 sports programme and suspension of recognition of AIBA
Boxing is set to maintain its place on the sports programme of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, but the recognition of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) should be suspended. This recommendation was put forward today by the IOC Executive Board (EB) to the IOC Session from 24 to 26 June 2019 in Lausanne.

Future Olympic Games elections to be more flexible
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board (EB) today approved major changes to the principles governing the future election of Games hosts.

IOC Executive Board proposes 10 new Members for election to the IOC Session
The proposal to elect 10 new IOC Members was submitted today by the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to the IOC Session that will meet in June in Lausanne. The vote is due to be held on 26 June 2019.

Summary IOC Executive Board Meeting, 26-28 March, Lausanne

 

Day 1

  • The IOC Executive Board has lifted the status of conditional inclusion of weightlifting on the programme of Paris 2024.
  •  The IOC EB recognised the resignation of IOC Member Tsunekazu Takeda from Japan.
  • An additional EB meeting on 22 May in Lausanne.

Day 2

  • The IOC EB accepts Paris 2024 proposal for four new sports (breaking, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing). This proposal will now be put forward to the IOC session in June in Lausanne.
  • The IOC EB approved an increased revenue distribution from PyeongChang 2018 to NOCs and IFs.
  • Preparations for Tokyo 2020 are on time and on budget.
  • Sports programme for the Olympic Winter Games 2026; The IOC EB agreed on the proposal of the IOC’s Olympic Programme Commission to have no changes to the programme for Beijing 2022 and to put forward the same seven sports to the upcoming IOC Session.

Day 3

  • The IOC EB was in favour of hosting the IOC Session in 2021 in Athens, Greece, and has asked the administration to prepare a feasibility study for the next Executive Board meeting.
  • The IOC EB decided to continue with the Olympism in Action Forum. It tasked the IOC administration with looking into the option of holding the Forum, starting in 2023, at the same time in Lausanne every four years, if possible in combination with another IOC event.

Updates and decisions by the IOC Executive Board:

 

Rio 2016

On Sunday the IOC Executive Board met with de president of the Rio 2016 organizing committee and released the following statement concerning the status of the dissolution process of the organizing committee of Rio2016 (and outstanding payments):

Given that more detailed information is required before Rio2016 financial accounts can be closed, the Executive Board deferred any further consideration at this stage. The Executive Board state that the IOC has closed all of its obligations with the organizing committee in December 2016. As confirmed by the organizing committee. The IOC contributed a record amount to the succesful staging of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. According to audited accounts we contributed $1.53 billion to their success. This is in addition to an exceptional effort to significant cost savings and additional financial undertakings by all the Olympic stakeholders which amounted to hundreds of millions of dollars to make these historic Games possible.

The IOC Executive Board will meet tomorrow in Lausanne to discuss reports on the 2024/2028 Olympic Games and the 2026 Winter Olympics Candidature Procedure.

Meeting of the IOC Executive Board in Lausanne – Update

The Executive Board (EB) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will meet on 9 June in Lausanne.

The EB will receive and discuss two reports from the Working Group currently looking into the candidature procedure. The working group consists of the four IOC Vice-Presidents and has been tasked with exploring how to make the candidature procedure more proactive, more collaborative and less expensive in the future.

There will be two reports:
– A report on the Olympic Games 2024 and 2028.
– A second report on the reform of the candidature procedure that will be applicable to the Olympic Winter Games 2026.

The EB will also discuss and finalize the Tokyo 2020 event programme.

IOC; OCOG Updates (IOC EB Meeting December 2016)

During the IOC Executive Board meetings, the Organising Committees for the Olympic Games (OCOG) gave an update on their preparations:

 

Rio 2016

PyeongChang 2018

Next Olympic Host City with 425 Days to go. Activities taking place:

  • World Press Briefing
  • World Broadcaster Meeting
  • Chef de Mission – one year to go
  • 24 Test events

 

Buenos Aires 2018

Three new sports were added to the programme;

  • Dance sport (men’s, women’s and mixed team breakdancing)
  • Karate (three kumite events per gender)
  • Sport Climbing (combined event for men and women – lead, bouldering and speed)

Last August, karate and sport climbing were also added to the Tokyo 2020 sports programme.

 

Tokyo 2020

About the $20 billion budget, Mark Adams (IOC President’s Spokesman) said:

“That is a ceiling, meaning that it’s not the figure. And it’s certainly not a figure that the IOC recognizes or sees were it really comes from. And we gave the very strong opinion advise that they can and will save more money, particularly on that 20 billion figure which seems to come, we know not were from really. It’s a ceiling and certainly not a figure that we recognize.”

Beijing 2022

Mark Adams (IOC President’s Spokesman) said:

“Impressive report from 2022. I Think the executive board were very impressed by the progress being made. The OCOG is taking shape, now got a 176 staff. 50 of whom were on the Rio observers programme.”

 

2024 Bid

The IOC Executive Board announced that Los Angeles, Budapest and Paris will transition to the next stage of the candidature process:

  • February 3, 2017; Deadline for submission of Candidature File stage 3.
  • April/May 2017; IOC Evaluation Commission visits each city.
  • July 2017; Candidate City 2024 Briefing (for IOC members and Summer Olympic International Federations).
  • September 12-17, 2017; 130th IOC Session in Lima, Peru.
