EXPLAINER: TORCH RELAY
The Olympic torch relay is a significant and symbolic tradition that precedes the Olympic Games, serving as a testament to the values of unity, peace, and the global spirit of sport. Originating from ancient Greek rituals, the modern Olympic torch relay was reintroduced in the 20th century as part of the Olympic Games ceremonies.

The journey of the Olympic flame begins in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games. Here, using a parabolic mirror to harness the sun’s rays, a flame is ignited by the high priestess of the Temple of Hera, using a parabolic mirror. This flame symbolizes the purity of the Games and the connection to ancient traditions.

From Olympia, the flame embarks on a meticulously planned journey, traveling through various countries and regions before reaching the host city of the upcoming Olympic Games. This journey is a testament to the Olympic spirit, as the flame traverses continents, cultures, and communities, uniting people around the world in anticipation of the Games.

The torch relay typically lasts several months and covers thousands of kilometers, with each torchbearer carrying the flame for a portion of the route. Torchbearers are often selected for their contributions to sport, community service, or embodying the Olympic ideals of excellence, friendship, and respect.

Along the route, the torch relay becomes a celebration of the Olympic movement, with communities organizing events, festivals, and ceremonies to welcome the flame. Crowds gather to cheer on the torchbearers, creating an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation as the flame passes through their towns and cities.

The final leg of the torch relay culminates in the host city, where the flame is carried into the Olympic Stadium during the opening ceremony. The final torchbearer, often a prominent athlete or public figure chosen for their significance to the host country or the Olympic movement, lights the cauldron, officially marking the beginning of the Games.

The Olympic torch relay serves as a powerful symbol of hope, inspiration, and the enduring spirit of the Olympic Games. It brings people together across borders and cultures, reinforcing the values of friendship, solidarity, and peace that lie at the heart of the Olympic movement.
