Helin & Co Designs Metsä Pavilion for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo
Helin & Co Architects is designing a wooden Metsä pavilion to be used during the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The pavilion will rise to the site of the Finnish Embassy in Japan, which is centrally located in Tokyo near the Roppongi district.

The long traditions of wood architecture in both Japan and Finland have been taken into consideration in the design process. “The pavilion is approachable and authentic while being stylish and of high quality at the same time,” says Pekka Helin, architect of the pavilion.

One of the carrying themes is sustainability, and in the future the building will be used for other purposes as well. “Once the pavilion is no longer needed, it can be demolished, sent to another location and rebuilt there. The main idea is to demonstrate to the pavilion visitors how in Finland, wood is used ecologically and sustainably,” Helin says.

The Metsä pavilion is a versatile space where many kinds of different events, such as seminars, exhibitions and parties can be organized. The pavilion will also serve as a meeting place for Finland’s Olympic team during the Summer Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games. The pavilion will be built by Metsä Group and Business Finland.
